A 5-star luxury hotel set in the heart of a historic precinct, a winner of the annual DestinAsian Readers’ Choice Awards 2017 and one of the top hotels in Singapore.
Singapore is arguably the world’s most cosmopolitan city, where East really does meet West, not just in lip service, but in the food, the culture, the shopping and the lifestyle. What’s more, Singapore does luxury well, so it’s also perfect for a purposefully organized small stopover at the end of an international trip before you have to head home to reality.
I stayed at the Intercontinental Singapore hotel in April 2019, and that’s my review:
Without a doubt, this is one of the best hotels I stayed to.
Elegant, with a touch of old-fashion atmosphere offering a very good and punctual service. The staff is very focused on client’s, and always ready to help you.
Located in the design centres of the Bugis and Bras Basah areas, the InterContinental Singapore site was originally a series of local shophouses which were retained, refurbished and charmingly worked into the design. These interconnected shophouses now hold the Entry Foyer, Lobby Lounge, Club InterContinental Lounge and numerous restaurants and event spaces before broadening into a tower containing 403 rooms spanning more than 1000 square metres. At its base, modern light-filled high ceilings form the heart of its interior, while colonial mouldings adorn its exterior, punctuated by Peranakan decorative tiles, and bright red traditional terracotta roof tiles.
Our stay at the Intercontinental Singapore hotel
We arrived at InterContinental Singapore by a private cab, a service provided by the hotel itself for clients staying at high-category rooms; and were met by a bevvy of porters at the door who took bags and generally were pretty amenable. Having booked a room with Club access so were moved upstairs to the Club lounge to handle our check-in at the Club reception desk, which was handled efficiently and friendly with some drinks served while we waited – a nice touch.
Each of the rooms at InterContinental Singapore has that stop-you-in-your-tracks, wow factor. Stepping through the door the room speaks in tones of calmness, serenity and opulence with a touch of drama brought together by the silk batik headboard. The fabrics are lush grey, white and gold with subtle splashes of crimson, the marble inlay is understated and tasteful, large mirrors open the space and reflect light from the substantial windows, framed by blackout curtains. The bathroom contains a large bathtub and shower with multiple heads for all preferences. There are splashes of locale throughout, yet the hero piece of the room is by far the black marble-topped, gold inlaid, lacquered Chinese cabinet topped with an explosion of deep purple orchids, fruit bowl and personal Nespresso machine.
The Room we checked-in into was the Club Deluxe Room, which occupies one of the top levels of the building. The 38 sqm room has partial views of the city skyline. Taking on inspirations from the Peranakan culture, the lighter-colour tones of the room makes it up for the minimal natural lighting in the room.
My room on the 15th floor was bright, comfy and overlooked the Bugis area. I could even see the Andaz Singapore from my room. The room had a 42 inch LCD TV with HDMI ports, while the work desk and bedside had USB connectors to charge my mobile phone and accessories. The room itself sports a classic elegant design, with decorative pillars, gold trims on the ceiling and marble flooring.
You can’t go wrong staying with the Intercontinental Singapore, which is in central Singapore near many tourist attractions. If you’re looking to shop, probably a hotel in Orchard would be better, but for cultural attractions and the newer sightseeing places like Gardens by the Bay, this is a good hotel to be at.

Intercontinental Singapore Review: Great hotel and service
With no doubt, this is one of the best hotels I stayed at.
The Intercontinental Singapore hotel is very well located, in the heart of the cultural Bugis district, just a few meters from the underground stop and very closed to Bugis Junction shopping complex, Singapore’s first glass-covered air-conditioned shopping street.
The high-class service is amazing, the staff is very welcoming and kind. The rooms are very well equipped and spacious. Rooms service and restaurants are excellent.
I also appreciated the Executive Lounge very much!
- Excellent service
- Executive Lounge
- Room Comfort
- Round-trip limousine transfer when staying at the Suite
- Somehow a bit expensive (not that much, considering the hotel category)
- The swimming pool only has few sunbeds available
